Scarecrows at Old Alabama Town!

Monday morning was an exciting time in the Old Alabama Town Herb Gardens. A beautiful day with many wonderful plants growing in each garden dressed up for fall with blazing colors. Art Adventure in the Gardens this year resulted in some wonderful sculptures designed by many. Judging was completed by Mayor Todd Strange with Capitol City Master Gardener taking first place blue ribbon, Ms Lizzie Turnipseed receiving second place red ribbon, a tie for third place white ribbon went to Elmore County Master Gardner and Ms Jane McCarthy OATHS member, and also an honorable mention ribbon to Eat South. Many thanks to all who participated in this fun filled event.

Hops and Barley!

hops102015Lee Harrison of Fairview Homebrew, spoke about the herb Hops and brewing beer at the Tuesday meeting at the Loeb Center. We got to touch and smell different varieties of hops, and learned a bit about the brewing process. It was a fascinating topic from a genial and knowledgeable speaker. Fairview Homebrew sells home brewing equipment and supplies, along with an amazing assortment of craft sodas.
In Society business, the changes to the By-Laws were passed, new handbooks distributed, and two new members welcomed.

At the Governor’s Mansion Gardens

On 16 July, Herb Society members worked in the Herb Garden at the Governor’s Mansion. They tolerated the horrific heat and weeded, planted several herbs, and applied pine straw. The chef was very excited to see all the basil, and hopefully the swallowtail butterfly larva will not eat all the parsley and dill. Check out the “Before” and “After” photos!
